Ryobi ONE+ Hybrid LED Color Range Work Light Review

I had never really cared about an LED work light as a woodworker until I saw the new Ryobi 18-Volt ONE+ Hybrid LED Color Range Work Light.  The long and short of it is, this beast is as useful and versatile as they come and if you are going to buy one light for your home, your shop, your garage…whatever, THIS is that light.

This work light just blew me away with it’s versatility

Ok so high praise…but Why?

The reason I gush about this light so much is that is does the work of an LED shop light, but has the features of a professional video and photography production light as well.  This helps with SO MANY different things! All of these extra features take a run of the mill shop light and turn it into a must have tool in anyone’s arsenal.

As a Homeowner

Generally as a homeowner you think of a worklight for two things working under the sink or having a nifty little toy to take with you camping.  The Ryobi 18-Volt ONE+ Hybrid LED Color Range Work Light does this and so much more. This light adds 2 awesome features that nothing else on the market in this category does.  The first feature is adjustable color temperature, color temperature is that little Kelvin scale number (usually 3-5000k) you see on light bulbs. On the Ryobi 18-Volt ONE+ Hybrid LED Color Range Work Light this is adjustable between 2700K (very warm) and 5000K (daylight.)  This adjustable setting allows you to test paint chips in a room to see how they will look at different times of the day. It also allows you to test out different color temperature lighting scenarios in a room, to decide exactly what color temperature of lights you want to light buy to light a room with.  The second feature that really puts this light in a league of its own in concert with the variable color temperature is the variable brightness. Again, this can help you better choose how to light a room with settings between 1200 lumens, 700 lumens, and 100 lumens (A Lumen are how bright a light is)

However you look at this light, it is indispensable for a homeowner, either just as a traditional shop light for doing some DIY work in those dark crevices of your home.

As a Professional

As a Professional of course the color temperature and brightness settings are huge.  This can be hugely useful as a painter or as a little bit of “flair” to really put your clients in the space you are working with them on.

Let’s look at another word in the title though.  “Ryobi 18-Volt ONE+ Hybrid LED Color Range Work Light” hybrid, that is right it runs on either lithium ONE+ batteries or an extension cord.  This hybrid feature is another thing you are just now starting to see entering the shop light market. You can run this thing off any of the 18V One+ batteries, but you can also plug it in and run it for as long as you need it.  Another nice feature on this light for the pros is a standard ¼ – 20 thread on the bottom of the stand and a threaded light stand adapter so it can be put on either a tripod of a lightstand.

All of this makes for a super versatile light to bring along to any job.

As a Content Creator

This is where I fell in love with this light and where it stood out from the crowd.  Whether you are a painter, a Woodworker (hey that’s me) or a photographer posting those Instagram bangers, this thing is a game changer.  I will let you in on a little secret…All of those photos you see online from top creators are staged!  AND they are doing trickery with light and contrast to catch your attention.  The Ryobi 18-Volt ONE+ Hybrid LED Color Range Work Light is a light that costs 70 bucks, and can serve the role of a $170 professional lighting setup.  It does not have the level of light color accuracy that a professional light has but is more than good enough for most content creators.  It is a great way to step your game up for sure.

The one place where this light will let you down is in shooting high frame rate video.  It does flicker at 120fps but is still useable at 24fps. This is another place where a professional production light will edge it out, but it’s still a great tool to augment your production tool kit.

Conclusion

If you are a homeowner and need a work light, get this one.  If you are a contractor and need color temperature adjustments, flexibility of plug in or battery power, and the versatility of mounting a light anywhere, get this one.  If you are a content creator wanting to add some contrast to your photos or need a versatile key light for  video, as long as you are not shooting silky Peter McKinnon style b-roll at 120fps, get this one.

I really like this light, it does so many things that are useful in so many different situations. Versatility is the word of the day for this light and I think that is why the name is such a mouthful. It must have been hard to encompass all that is does without calling it the Ryobi 18-Volt ONE+ Hybrid LED Color Range Work Light.  I like it if you can’t tell.
